Substitute Teaching in Pennsylvania Requirements:

In order to substitute teach in any Pennsylvania school district,
you must possess the following credentials:
 

1 - A valid Pennsylvania Teaching Certification, Authorized Letter of Completion++ or PA Emergency Certification*a1
++ Letters of Completion issued by a college or university are only valid for 60 days. You must send STS a copy of your actual certificate once you receive it.

2 - A Pennsylvania Criminal Records check (Act 34) that is clean and less than one year old -
   Click Here to process your background check on line. $10 processing fee required.

3 - A Pennsylvania Child Abuse Clearance History (Act 151) that is clean and less than one year old -
   Click Here to print the necessary forms. $10 money order required.

4 - A FBI Criminal History Record that is clean and less than 1 year old. Click Here to register.
A $33 processing fee is required. Please be aware that these fees may change without notice. You will need to bring your Proof of Transaction Receipt containing the PAE number when you come for your interview! This is available ONLY AFTER you have been fingerprinted. Click Here to get your receipt.

5 - Proof of a TB test or chest x-ray that is less than two years old

6 - A Resume'

7 - Three professional letters of recommendation
 
8 - A voided personal check or banking information (routing number and account number) for direct    deposit setup
 
9 - 2 Valid forms of Identification: For example:
     a) Driver's license or Photo ID and social security card
     b) Driver's license or Photo ID and birth certificate
     c) Passport

10 - A valid email address -- not a college or university address for those will expire! If you do not have a valid email address, it is recommended that you set up for example a Hotmail or GMail email account. This is how all future communications from STS will reach you.

At your interview, we will take a photo of you for an ID badge. Please dress appropriately.

IMPORTANT NOTICE: You must bring all official, original documents to your interview. Copies are acceptable and encouraged, as long as the interviewer reviews the original. Original, official documents that have been altered in any way will not be accepted.

Out of State Certification
A teaching certificate issued by another state must already be converted to a Pennsylvania Certification. Visit the PA Department of Education's website for more information.


Pennsylvania Emergency Certification - For non-PA Certified candidates ONLY!
An emergency certification (E-Cert) can only be issued by the state of PA, however, candidates must meet the requirements for the issuance an emergency certificate in addition to all of the requirements mentioned above. Please note: It is the right of the school district to deny any E-Cert. E-Certs do not cross county and school district lines. Emergency Certificates are only valid for a period of 1 school year. Regardless of date issued, E-certs expire July 31 of every school year.

Emergency Certification (E-Cert) Requirements are:

Candidates must have a Bachelors Degree and actively working toward PA Certification.

1 - Candidates must complete the PDE Form 338G. Click here to get it. Follow the instructions on completing the form. Important!  A legally qualified Physician must complete section III - Health Certificate. Be sure to complete the entire form and sign in section VI. This form must be completed before you come in for your appointment. Bring only pages 1 and 2.

2 - Candidates must provide a set of official, sealed transcripts from the college or university that conferred your Bachelor's degree. Masters Degree Transcripts are not acceptable! We cannot accept opened or Internet transcripts to process the E-Cert.

3 - A money order in the amount of $5 made payable to the school district issuing the E-Cert. Applicant's signature is required on all money orders.

4 - A copy of your degree or unofficial transcript is required for STS files.

5 - All of the requirements starting with number  2 listed above.

Aides and Personal Care Assistants

In order to be a substitute aide, paraprofessional or personal care assistant in any Pennsylvania school district, you must possess the following credentials:
 
 
1 - Proof of a high school diploma or higher education

2 - A Pennsylvania Criminal Records check (Act 34) that is clean and less than one year old -

All candidates will be required to attend STS Academy, which is a program designed to prepare candidates for special education and one on one aide positions. Included are CPR and First Aid training, and an Introduction to Behavior Principles in the classroom.

Substitute Teaching in Delaware Requirements:

In order to substitute teach in Delaware, you must possess the following credentials:
  Class A Subs: a Teaching Certification or Masters Degree - proof required
  Class B Subs: a Bachelor's Degree - proof required
  Class C Subs: a High School Diploma or Associates Degree - proof required

 FBI Criminal Records Check Results that is less than 1 year old - contact the DE State Police at 800-464-4357 and ask for "Fingerprinting".

 Recent TB Test or Chest X-Ray that is less than 2 years old

 A Resume

 3 professional letters of recommendation

2 Valid forms of Identification: For example:
     a) Driver's license or Photo ID and social security card
     b) Driver's license or Photo ID and birth certificate
